Guidelines for sailing in hot and inclement weather

Basis for policy

The Management Committee of the Adelaide Sailing Club has established this policy using the 
guidelines of Sports Medicine Australia and will consider the SMA recommendations when conducting 
regattas, especially when young sailors are participating. 
The management committee recognises that on-water activities offer a cooler environment than land 
based sports and this fact means that sailing may proceed when other land based sports have been 
cancelled. 

 

Sailing in hot weather (including sail training activities)

During Summer months, extreme hot weather may require the Committee of the Adelaide Sailing Club 
to consider cancelling racing and/or training programs. 
The main factors that Club officials will consider are the risks of heat stress, dehydration and sunburn. 


Sailing in inclement weather (including sail training activities)

In case of strong winds and extreme sea conditions, Adelaide Sailing Club will refer to Yachting South
Australia listing of Recommended Class Wind Limits, which provides a guide to maximum wind 
speeds, which are recommended by Class Associations sailing in South Australia. 


Decision to cancel racing

The decision to conduct scheduled racing events is the responsibility of the Race Officer and Race
Secretary, who shall consult with the Flag Officers of the Adelaide Sailing Club to determine on the 
day, whether scheduled racing will proceed. 
The decision to conduct sail training programs is the responsibility of the Club Coach, who shall 
consult with the Flag Officers of the Adelaide Sailing Club to determine on the day, whether scheduled
youth or other scheduled sail training will proceed.


Notification of cancellation of racing

Sailing events will not normally be cancelled until the day of the event, however in exceptional 
circumstances when the decision to cancel is made in advance the management committee may 
advise members by email or post a notice on the Adelaide Sailing Club website. 


Considerations when planning/conducting sailing in hot conditions

° All participants, including the umpires, officials and volunteers must be considered. 
° The risk for injury or illness is extreme when exercising in very hot conditions. 
° When the forecast is for dry hot conditions the Ambient Temperature should be used. 
° Dehydration will make an athlete more susceptible to fatigue and muscle cramps, and may 
lead to heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke.
° To avoid dehydration, SMASA recommends that all participants should: Drink at least 500 mls 
(2 - 3 glasses) of water prior to commencing exercise 
° Continue drinking at least 200 mls of water every 10-15 minutes during exercise. 
° If any players or officials experience any symptoms of High Heart Rate, 
Dizziness, Headache, Loss of endurance and/or skill, Confusion or Nausea, they should stop 
the activity and seek medical advice if the symptoms continue or worsen.

Competitor’s responsibility

o Competitors should be aware that in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing: 
The decision to start a race will be at the sole discretion of the Race Officer, however 
competititors must understand that they participate in a race entirely at their own risk. 
RRS Rule 4, Decision to Race states: "The responsibility for a boat's decision to 
participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone."
o Competitors remain solely responsible for the seaworthiness of a boat whose entry is 
accepted and the sufficiency or adequacy of its equipment.

General advice on treatment of persons with heat related illness

o Lie or sit the victim down 
o Loosen and remove excessive clothing 
o Cool by fanning or using a hand held water spray bottle (or both). 
o Give them cool water to drink if conscious or give them ice chips to suck 
o Apply a damp ice pack(s), well wrapped in a towel, to the groin and armpit regions 
o Seek medical assistance
